Kitchen Design Checklist

When you are in the process of designing your new kitchen there are a lot of things to consider, and of course you don't want to miss out anything. In this brief post I will go through the most important items which should make it onto your 'must have' list. brennan1

1. Worktop Space: The single most important part of designing a new kitchen is your work surface area. In an ideal situation you should at least 600mm of space both sides of your hob/range cooker, but the more the better. This reduces the distance to carry heavy and hot items when cooking. The same goes for your oven, whether eye level or built under the worktop.

You should also try and have a large uninterrupted surface where you can spread out the dinner plates to make serving a lot easier. You can free up your work surface area by having well designed storage cabinets throughout your kitchen. This limits the number of items on your countertop which take up valuable space.

The only items that should be on your worktop are your toaster and your kettle. Or if you can find a home for your toaster, and can stretch to buying a new boiling water tap, your worktops will be completely free from clutter! The boiling water tap made it onto this 'must have' list. See No. 4 below.

edel keane 1

2. Accessible Storage: 'More drawers than doors!' - That's one of our favorite sayings here at Noel Dempsey Design. The reason for this is that when you open a drawer it pulls everything out of the press so you can see exactly what's inside. With a standard opening door the items at the back aren't very visible, and as a result seldom used.

Drawers are great for storing all kinds of kitchen items, such as tinned food, jars, pasta, food mixers, blenders, plates and dishes, pots and pans. We can custom make your drawers any size to suit the items you would like to store in them.

Pull Out Waste Bins

3. Waste Bins: A 'must have' in every kitchen, pull-out bins. They are available in a number of different sizes, various shapes, and you can have up to four or five separate compartments.

All the bins can be removed for easy cleaning, and they usually have a soft-closing mechanism built in to match your cupboard doors.

Quooker Fusion Tap

4. A Quooker Tap: Or a boiling water tap if you're unfamiliar with the brand Quooker. A boiling water tap replaces your existing kettle and will provide you with instant boiling water 24/7.

They are great for cooking, making tea/coffee, sterilising bottles, cleaning pots and pans, or anything you boil the kettle for at home.

The new Quooker Fusion is now a direct replacement for both your kettle and your standard kitchen tap, by giving you boiling and hot and cold water.

Warm - Lighting Over and Under Wall Cabinets

5. Lighting: Often overlooked when re-designing a kitchen space. The correct type of lighting can completely transform your kitchen from being a cold unwelcoming area to a nice homely room.

The most important area to light up is the work surface. You can do this by running fluorescent or LED lights underneath the wall cabinets. For a little extra light, add some on top of the presses too. This creates a lovely warm glow to the kitchen.

The image above has the all the lights turned on and helps brighten the entire room.

The image below has no lighting turned on. Notice how the cabinet and wall colours look a cooler shade of grey.

Colder Tones - No Lighting Turned On

I hope these few tips help with your new kitchen design. All of the designers here at Noel Dempsey use these and many other design techniques to ensure that your new kitchen is exactly what you dreamed of. Our years of experience and extensive knowledge of the industry has made us one of Ireland's top bespoke kitchen companies, used by architects and designers alike.

Plain English Kitchen Design - Ireland

As the name suggests, a Plain English Kitchen is very plain, and very English. In this post I will go through the features and techniques used in creating a beautiful Noel Dempsey Plain English Kitchen. Plain English Kitchen

Design Features

1. Al the cabinets are wrapped in a solid timber frame which the doors sit flush into.

2. The plinth (kicker) can be reduced in height and stepped back from the front edge of the cabinet. This enhances the free standing look while still sealing the underneath of the presses.

Plain English Design

3. Or if you prefer to have no plinth stepped back we can run a decorative moulding across the front of your cabinets.

Plain English Kitchen

4. Door style: The door style can be customised by each client to create a unique look which you won't find anywhere else. In the Burnaby kitchen the client liked the Plain English Kitchen framing option, but wanted a door with a little more detail than the plain shaker panel door.

With this in mind, we designed and manufactured a door with a little beading inside the panel, and a subtle edge moulding that gave the Plain English Kitchen a beautiful contemporary feel.

5. The essence of a Noel Dempsey Plain English Kitchen is the simplicity of its design. Keep it plain and simple, not too many grooves and places for dust and dirt to gather.

Manufacturing Techniques

While I can't give away too much information about how we manufacture our Plain English Kitchens, all I can say is that our skilled craftsmen use traditional joinery techniques combined with our modern tools and machinery to manufacture the highest quality furniture.

When you choose a Noel Dempsey Kitchen you will receive a level of service and attention to detail that you won't find anywhere else. Your new kitchen can be customised in hundreds of ways to create an individual design that will suit you and your families lifestyle.

Steam Ovens - The Benefits

There is a buzz in the kitchen industry at the moment around steam ovens. Although they have been around for a number of years, only now are they becoming an essential appliance to have. So what are the advantages of cooking with steam?

Steam is recognised as one of the healthiest ways of cooking food as you don't need to use any fats when cooking meat, and all the natural goodness in vegetables are retained. Cooking with steam also helps retain the moisture in meat, keeping it tender and juicy.

Before you decide on which appliance you want to buy, it's important to think about how you cook at the moment, and what you'd like to be able to do in your new kitchen. There are a number of options open to you in relation to steam ovens.

1. Neff, Bosch, and Siemens all have combination steam ovens which have functions which allow you to use steam only, steam and hot air, or hot air only. These compact appliances are 45cm high with approx. 35-38L capacity.

Bosch Combi Steam

 2. Neff have a 60cm high, 67L capacity oven which has an 'AquaAssist' feature. This adds moisture to the cooking process preventing foods drying out. This uses a combination of hot air and steam also.

Neff AquaAssist B45C52

3. AEG have one of the largest capacity combination steam ovens on the market here in Ireland. Their BS7304001M has a massive 74L capacity oven with soft close door. Again with this oven you can use a combination of steam and hot air, steam only, or hot air only.

AEG BS730400

Why Buy Your Appliances From Us?

All of the Noel Dempsey Design staff are trained to provide you with impartial advice on which appliances will work best for you and suit your lifestyle. We are agents for all the leading appliance brands, Neff, Bosch, Siemens, AEG, Britannia and Liebherr.

Painted Kitchens Ireland

The current trend in kitchen design in Ireland is for a painted kitchen. But why is it so popular? In this post I will go through the benefits of a hand painted kitchen over a spray painted finish. A Noel Dempsey hand painted kitchen is installed by our experienced staff in a primed finish. This white undercoat is applied to provide the best possible surface for our painter to apply the three finish coats by hand. All of our hand painted kitchens receive three top/finish coats in your home after our installation team have finished.

A spray painted kitchen is pre-finished in our workshop before it's installed.

The main benefit of choosing a hand painted finish over a spray painted finish is that a hand painted kitchen can be touched up in your home. With a spray painted kitchen the doors must be removed and resprayed in our workshop. So if one of your doors gets damaged or marked throughout its lifetime, it's easier and quicker to repair the damage on a hand painted kitchen.

While we recommend a hand painted finish, our spray painted kitchens are still manufactured with the same high quality materials and are just as durable for everyday life. The versatility of the hand painted finish and ability to repair any damages make it a better choice.
